In the first leg, Chelsea shockingly lost 0-1 to Boro, so in the rematch at Stamford Bridge, coach Mauricio Pochettino’s team was determined to reclaim both principal and profit to win the right to enter the League Cup final.
That determination was clearly shown right after the opening whistle, when Chelsea pushed the attacking formation high. In the 15th minute, they broke the balance, with midfielder Jonny Howson accidentally burning his own goal.
An early goal gave Chelsea a boost of momentum. In the 29th minute, the gap was doubled for the home team after Enzo Fernandez’s close-range cushion. Less than 10 minutes later, it was midfielder Axel Disasi’s turn to score to increase the score to 3-0. Then, before halftime, it was Cole Palmer’s turn to shine, helping Chelsea easily lead Boro by four goals.
Holding a huge advantage, Chelsea actively slowed down in the second half. However, the Premier League representative’s moves on the ball were still potentially dangerous. And within 4 minutes, from 77 to 81, Chelsea had two more chances to shake the opponent’s net, thanks to Palmer and Noni Madueke, respectively.
Middlesbrough’s efforts only helped them get one honorable goal in the 88th minute. In the end, Chelsea crushed Boro 6-1 in the semi-final second leg of the League Cup. The total score after two matches was 6-2 in favor of Chelsea, thereby helping them win tickets to the final.
