Based on performance in La Liga and the King’s Cup the previous season, four teams—Real Madrid, Atletico, Barcelona, and Osasuna—will compete in the Spanish Super Cup from January 10 to January 14. The teams compete in elimination rounds at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s King Saud University Stadium.

On January 11, Barcelona will play Osasuna, and on January 10, Real Madrid will play Atletico. The game picked up speed early on for both Real Madrid and Atletico. Mario Hermoso gave Atletico the lead in the sixth minute.

 

Antonio Rudiger’s goal in the 20th minute also swiftly tied the score for Real Madrid. Ferland Mendy gave the Spanish Royal Club a 2-1 lead nine minutes later.

 

Even after giving up two goals in a row, Atletico maintained their composure. Antoine Griezmann’s goal at minute 37 tied the score at the end of the first half for the Rojiblancos.

 

Atletico was the team that regained the advantage in the second half. Rudiger, a midfielder, mishandled an own goal in the 78th minute. But Real Madrid’s 3-3 draw in the 85th minute, thanks to a goal from Dani Carvajal, ended Atletico’s lead.

Real Madrid was more in control, and their boldness allowed them to score two goals in extra time. Savic’s own goal in the 116th minute was the first, and Diaz’s goal completed Real Madrid’s 5-3 victory.

 

Real Madrid prevailed 5-3 at the end of this match. On January 14, coach Ancelotti’s squad emerged victorious in the Spanish Super Cup semifinal and bided their time to await the outcome of Barcelona vs. Osasuna.
