Barcelona’s Crucial Defender Doubtful for Spanish Super Cup Following Injury Against Las Palmas

Barcelona just about managed to come away with a win against Las Palmas last night courtesy of a late penalty from Ilkay Gundogan.

But the win came at a cost for the reigning champions of La Liga as they lost yet another key player to an injury.

Indeed, key defender Joao Cancelo came off with a knee injury during the first half of the match, which sent alarm bells ringing within the Barça camp.

Cancelo could miss the Super Cup

Manager Xavi Hernandez downplayed the severity of Cancelo’s injury after the game, stating that it was not serious.

However, a report from Mundo Deportivo’s Roger Torello paints a rather grim picture for Barcelona and Cancelo.

As per the update, all signs point towards the 29-year-old having suffered a sprain in his left knee, and as things stand, his availability for the upcoming Spanish Super Cup appears highly unlikely.

Barcelona take on CA Osasuna in the second semi-finals of the Super Cup on January 11. A win there would set up a final date against one of Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

And, Cancelo’s unavailability would be seen as a big blow as he has been a permanent fixture in the side since joining Barcelona in the summer.

The Manchester City loanee has performed well for the most part in his debut season in Barça colours and having him available for the important games in the Super Cup would have been crucial.

A clearer picture about his injury and recovery should emerge in the coming hours after he is thoroughly tested by the club’s medical department.
