Manchester United contemplate £45m Premier League dud as first acquisition following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s acquisition

Timo Werner, a £45 million dud at Chelsea, is on Manchester United’s shortlist for a January surprise transfer.

Ratcliffe, a British business magnate and former Chelsea season ticket holder, is reportedly nearing a £1.3 billiоn agreement to purchаse a 25% interest in United, giving his petrochemicals firm, INEOS, authority over the club’s football operations. Improving the Red Devils’ recruitment off the field and on is one of their top concerns, however Werner isn’t the best choice for a starting point.

After his 2020 relocation to Chelsea didn’t work out, the club sent him back to East Germany, where he hasn’t been able to get his career back on track. Despite the 27-year-old’s demotion from the German national team and lack of playing time since May, United reportedly have already asked about his availability, according to Sky Sports.

Werner is unhappy with his dwindling role under manager Marc Rose, but he would rather remain at Leipzig until the summer. On Sunday, they beаt Freiburg 3-1 without the 57-time senior international seeing action.

After spending £72 million on a forward, United are looking to add to their roster. At the tender age of twenty, Rasmus Hojlund has had a rocky start to his role as Manchester United’s starting striker. Marcus Rashford has declared his preference for playing on the left wing, while Anthony Martial’s inconsistent fitness record makes him an untrustworthy backup for boss Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag may take use of Werner’s versatility by using him as either a wide forward or one of two strikers. If he were to sign with Manchester United, he would reunite with Mason Mount, a wоunded ex-Chelsea teammate. It’s not obvious if United would rather have a permanent transfer or a loan; although, considering their January signing history, the latter appears more probable.

While former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer loaned Odion Ighalo in 2020, Ten Hag brought in Marcel Sabitzer and Wout Weghorst, two strikers and a midfielder, till the end of the season. Every single one of their Old Trafford arrivals—including Werner’s—raised an eyebrow.
